Come 2010 and there would be little chance that you'd be scampering around for a "compatible" charger once you realize your phone is about to run out of power. Just plug in any mobile phone charger you have in range and voila! your phone is charged!
This is possible because by 2010 most prominent mobile phone manufacturers will be adopting universal chargers and will use only one type of chargers across a variety of devices. The movement spearheaded by the Group Special Mobile Association (GSMA) has several major manufacturers including Apple, Nokia, Sony Ericsson, Motorola, LG , NEC, Qualcomm, Research In Motion, Samsung and Texas Instruments signed up for the initiative. The chargers will all soon be in the Micro USB form factor and for once, you would be able to use one charger across a variety of devices!
Earlier this year, the GSMA had proposed a plan wherein all mobile phone manufacturers will adopt a common charging standard by the year 2012. The initiative seems to have caught the fancy of some manufacturers and they are all set to introduce such devices by 2010 - at least in Europe. The trend is expected to continue to the rest of the globe in the foreseeable future.
Apart from the convenience factor, there is also a considerable environmental advantage of resorting to one common charger. The move is expected to cut down on the production of chargers -currently being offered with every new mobile phone. With a common charger, you can have a single charger for all your phones and that will render a new charger for every phone no longer a necessity. In fact, the charger could be an optional accessory if all goes well. This will obviously let the manufacturers cut down on the materials required to manufacture chargers and will also bring down the rate of waste generated by people discarding old and unusable chargers. The move will also bring a considerable reduction in emission of greenhouse gases during manufacturing and transportation of replacement
