Making the traveling of light unidirectional, an optical isolator is a passive magneto-optic device. The operation of the device is based on the Faraday Effect. To avoid unwanted feedback to the system, an optical isolator is used in applications. In an optical system, some serious problems are noticed because of reflections and backscattering of light which ranges from noise in the photo detectors to instabilities in the light sources. Feedback, even at an extremely low level, to a laser usually has a great effect on the laser characteristics. It can result in having fluctuations in the laser intensity, change the laser frequency, increase the laser noise, lock the laser to a different mode of operation, or drive the laser into instability, even in chaos. There are many undesirable effects on feedback to a photo detector or other parts of an optical system. At times you will notice that the problem is so severe that it makes the entire system useless.
