Theoretically, with a single data channel of a very high data rate, the full data transmission capacity of fiber could be exploited corresponding to a bandwidth of a very large channel. However, this would lead to a data rate that is far higher than what can be handled by optoelectronic receivers and senders given the enormous available bandwidth of the low-loss transmission window of silica single-mode fibers. Also, on such wide-bandwidth channels, several types of dispersion in the transmission fiber would have very detrimental effects so that the distance of transmission would be restricted strongly. By achieving a high total data rate by combining several or many channels and keeping the transmission rates of each channel at reasonably low levels, Wavelength division multiplexing by fiber multiplexer solves these problems.
